What’s in a business card

Fiona is a member of the Grapevine networking group in Milton Keynes and one of her 10-minute presentations to members was “What’s in a business card?”. Here is a summary of her talk and the ensuing discussion.

Alot of businesses have business cards. Some are really effective and serve their purpose well, but some fail at this miserably, but why is this?

What is the purpose of a business card?

  • To identify you and give your contact details
  • To identify your business and the products/services it offers
  • To help with first impressions and create a lasting memory
  • To give you and your business credibility

What to include?

  • Name
  • Business name/logo
  • Phone
  • Email address
  • Website
  • What the business does and the products/services on offer
  • (Address – there was some debate about this as those working from home may not want to make their address public. However it does add credibility and a feeling of permanency, particularly if the only phone number given is a mobile number)

Other considerations

  • The design – does it effectively portray the character of you/your business?
  • Don’t forget the back of the card – this offers plenty of space to include more information, a special offer or feature a particular product or service.
  • Print and paper quality – what does poor quality paper or printing say about the quality of the products or services you offer?
